Now me (Wendy)

Hiya, Portia. I don't think that's a ridiculous question at all. I agree
with you that Snape has some skill at legilimency. We see him practice it
on Harry in the course of the training. I just don't think he is a master
at legilimency in the same way that Dumbledore or Voldemort are. Notice
that when Snape uses legilimency on Harry (page 471, OoP, UK edition), he
uses his wand and actually casts a spell ("legilimens"). Presumably,
Dumbledore and Voldemort are skilled enough to be able to use this ability
without casting the spell, or even using a wand at all. I'm not sure this
is strictly canon, but we have seen times when Dumbledore certainly
appeared to be "reading" someone's mind, and there is no mention of him
casting the legilimency spell to do it. So I think that Snape's grasp of
the spell is enough to give Harry good start. In order to learn the
technique, he wouldn't need to be able to fight off the most powerful
mental intrusion at first. He could start more slowly, by learning to block
Snape's less potent legilimency, and once he'd grasped that he might need
to practice with someone of Dumbledore's caliber in order to improve his
skill.

Sorry if this seems ridiculous, but if Snape were teaching Harry

Legilimency? How would one learn to repel the invasion into one's
mind if the teacher was not skilled at invading? If I have

Thanks!!
