Too right!  After all the years of Catholic School education I can 
tell you...  There were many Snapish teachers (nuns and lay [non-
religious] teachers who, while being very stern taskmasters bordering 
on cruelty at times (complete with the rulers to your hands for 
punishment, yes, I am an oldie!) in the name of good teaching, would 
pray their little hearts out for you at a second's notice, as well as 
put themselves between dangerous situations and their students to 
protect those students. I am not sure if you can call it "being mean" 
but it sure seemed like it at the time.  However, we definately 
learned from them and were protected by them.  Sorry if a seem to be 
rambling here...  just my way of saying yes, you can have someone who 
is stern, a tad sadistic (I swear one teacher was sneering while 
wacking my knuckles!  LOl!) and even cruel at times, but they can 
still be "good" and I suppose even "caring" in their own way...
