My opinion:
Both Sirius and Snape are havng a very hard time letting go of the
past. Sirius was hurt by Snape. But Harry has to realize that Sirius
would have come if Harry was in danger no matter what Snape had said.
Snape did not goad Sirius out of hiding. Sirius went to Azkaban as a
young man and he was not able to grow up, he had to fight to be sane.
When he escaped he had to stay hidden. I think he was growing more
mature as the book went on; but he was unable to meet his full
potential. So I am in the camp that Dumbledore in trying to see the
big picture missed some important little things.
