According to "ask the astronomer" http://itss.raytheon.com/cafe/qadir/q1303.html The technical duration of a Full Moon is only a few minutes. I can assume it is in THAT particular minute that he transforms. According to the same site, the moon *appears* full, however, for many hours. So, perhaps it takes either many hours for the transformation to wear off, or the transformation lasts from the minute the moon is *truly* full until it the appearance of fullness decreases.
Just a few theories...
