It seems as though moonlight is the key... In PoA, Lupin was fine even though it was the Night of the Full Moon, until it popped out from behind the clouds. If it takes a couple seconds of moonlight from the life-size satellite to start the transformation, I suppose a 6ish inch diameter model would take longer, even if it's right there in front of a werewolf. Perhaps the effect of boggart!moonlight was also lessened by ambient lighting in the room? I think that a couple minutes with it in a dark room would do the trick.

I've been thinking about the whole Lupin's boggart and the full moon thing, and there's one thing that I see as being a problem.

If moonlight is what triggers the werewolf transformation, than why does Lupin even ever have to take a potion or worry about it at all? Think about it: He could lock himself in a dark room, making sure that there is no way light from the full moon can hit him, and voila! No more problems with becoming a mindless monster, or having to take disgusting potions.

I refer to JK Rowling's explanation of the incident on the grounds in PoA when Lupin transformed. She stated that, while the moon wouldn't have been *visible* because it was cloudy, it wasn't actually the clouds that delayed the transformation; the moon hadn't yet *risen*

Sorry that I don't have a way of referencing to this directly; if anyone does, let me know please!

Because of this and the dark room thing of mine, I think that moonlight can't be the cause. Instead, it is the presence of the full moon itself that causes Lupin's transformation.

Feel free to disagree with me or to tweak my theory!
