I see one of two possibilities:

1) Snape is not trying to reintegrate himself with that bunch. We
are told that Snape "knows what he must do," but that is all. I
think the readers are supposed to assume that Snape is trying to
infiltrate Riddle's little club again, but things such as his
interaction with Quirrell in SS/PS cause problems for the
assumption. He could be doing just about anything.

or

2) Snape is trying to be chummy with DE's "off the record." I tend
to favor this possibility. I think Snape is trying to get
information from his old friends (probably Lucius Malfoy, but it
could be anyone) without Tom finding out. I don't think Riddle
would forget how Snape treated Quirrell and Snape knows this.
Trying to get information this way, in my opinion, is much more
dangerous, which is why Dumbledore asks if Snape is "ready."

Of course there are other possibilities, probably as many
possibilities as there are members in this group. I'm glad you
posted this, as I actually posted something a few weeks ago asking
the exact same thing. Ok, everyone is now free to punch holes in my
theories.
