Dumbledore mentions that somebody overheard the prohecy. It is canon. 
I don't want to take a credit where it is not due though, because I 
was not making Snape more noble. (I like him and I think there is 
good in him, but I am VERY far from imagining him being sweetness and 
light) :o)

I was speculating that even if Snape tried to save Potters, he was 
trying to correct the wrong he did in the first place - telling 
Voldemort about the prophecy, so Harry will not feel incredibly 
grateful towards him. :)
