The thing is, Hogwarts *does* seem to be reasonably consistent. Most
things do not seem to move around. Because I have made the attempt to
create a coherent floorplan, I have gone through the books carefully
looking for location information - and most things remain in pretty much
the same location throughout the books. So the school *can* be mapped.
It seems pretty clear to me from reading the books with a particular eye
to locations that most things remain in pretty much the same place
(though the DADA office is giving me some problems at the moment...
rereading Order of the Phoenix to try and confirm one way or the other
if Umbridge uses that office after she becomes Head).
My floorplans are *not* intended to be 100% accurate (they certainly do
not contain 142 staircases, for example), but they are an attempt to
show a floorplan for the school that is consistent with the information
we have so far.
The one I referred people to before is being revised. OOTP gave me a lot
of new information - including clearer details on where the Hufflepuff
and Ravenclaw Commonrooms are, which I sorely needed.
