Okay, maybe this is farfetched, but when you look at the Sorting
Hat's song in OoP, it predicts the end of Hogwarts if the houses do
not unite to work together. We know that for the most part,
Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Gryffindor get along pretty well, with
only the normal amount of competition. Slytherin is the one group
that does not seem to cooperate willingly with anyone else. I'm
probably way off, here, but since JKR has used names frequently to
define people, could she be suggesting that Severus Snape is a key
to whether or not the houses can be united? Severus isn't exactly a
common name, and it can all to easily be made into Sever us,
or "divide us".
Just a thought. However, I am convinced that the houses will NOT be
sorted in the last book, either because the sorting hat refuses, or
because events are such that no new students will be brought in and
the rest are to be "united" in Dumbledore's Army.
I think that in keeping with the themes of redemption and 2nd
chances, Slytherin will have to join the other houses to prevent
Hogwarts from being destroyed. I think that by the 7th book, Draco
Malfoy will ultimately change his ways, much as James Potter changed
from being a bullying "toerag" to a Head Boy by his 7th year.
