I've considered this as well, and my personal belief is that he
wasn't in Slytherin. Although it is possible, even likely, that he
had his parent's ideas on purebloods and all that when he went to
Hogwarts, the hat sorts people based on their character, which means
it must be able to read students better than they could probably read
themselves at that point. This is done at age *eleven* which is
before most people have their ideals and character really set (for
example, Hermione is sorted into Gryffindor when the most logical
house at THAT point in her life would be Ravenclaw, although later
she proves to have the qualities of a Gryffindor just as much). Think
of the statement that there isn't a witch/wizard who went bad who
wasn't in Slytherin, how many people are "evil" at eleven? (although
I can understand in some cases--such as Malfoy--that its obvious even
at a young age). Perhaps he was sorted into Gryffindor based on his
character being someone who fit the qualities of a Gryffindor FAR
more than Slytherin, and it came as a big shock to him (and his
family of course), then later was clear to be the correct house. Of
course, this is all just a theory, its hard to be sure how the
sorting hat works.
SECONDLY, I think that him and James/Lupin/Peter were all in the same
house (it would be very hard for them to be as close as they were if
they weren't, they were aware every time Lupin went away--which would
be hard if they were in different houses, and they did certain things
together, such as making the map and becoming animagi, which would
require the sort of privacy best suited to a common room), and it
would seem very hard for James to be in Slytherin, seeing how Sirius
stated very clearly that he hated the dark arts.
Again, just my opinion (o;
