Oryomai:"I've said before that I don't *really* think Harry will
live...I'm more of a fan of
"Harry-will-die-and-everyone-will-forget-about-him," but if he lives I
think it's a dream. He'll wake up and be an eleven year old still
under the stairs at the Dursleys, but he'll know that he can survive
them. Or, perhaps he'll wake up and find a letter coming through the
mail slot for him."
JKR isn't much given to gimmicks, I believe, and I don't subscribe to
the theory that the wizard world is Harry's delusional escape from
abuse. Please Heaven some poor truly abused kid doesn't read that
ending. Harry finds the qualities in the wizard world that mold a
character that can endure the Dursleys. I hope some RL kid that
really needs it gets the lesson, too.
The Prophecy - that Harry and Voldemort must one destroy the other -
makes it more likely to me that Harry will live. Both going down
together doesn't seem like a JKR ending to me. Proof? None whatsoever.
The idea that Harry may have to sacrifice his magic to destroy
Voldemort is more interesting. What a sacrifice! It would be more
than his life, really, to give up the thing that saved him, that
identified him. Wow. He'd much rather die, I'm sure.
Harry has been paying a price for his victory, and he isn't done paying.
