I slightly disagree with you. I don't think this is a matter of
theory vs practice. I think it's a matter of keeping a cold head vs
panicking. Hermione panicks in those situations, but she still knows
how to use the spells. She doesn't know them only theoretically, she
also knows them practically. Her only problem is that she freezes and
loses her head in scary times.

*chuckle* And do you know why he actually does this admirably ?
Precisely because he's nowhere as good as Hermione. If Hermione led
that group, people would never find it in themselves to manage the
spells, because they would just go : I'm not as good as her, I can't
do it. But because it's Harry, who's exceptional only in DADA and
only because he put his heart into it, they feel they can do it too
if they really try. You've got a point ;-)

You know what ? I don't think she wants her day to come. She seems
quite happy cheering from the sidelines and giving a hand when
needed. She doesn't strike me as desperately wanting to be an
official leader. The only time she really tried to boss people around
was about SPEW, and that was only because her indignation was so hot
and nobody else would move.
