"Severus Snape," as I'm sure most of you know, is an anagram for
Perseus Evans. This is basis for a lot of speculation, but I would
just like to note Perseus the mythological hero loved a woman he
rescued, named Andromeda. We are told Tonk's mother is named
Andromeda early in the fifth book, by Sirius. So that's probably your
best bet, and I wouldn't bet on this theory unless someone was
threatening me with a slug-belching jinx.

Me :

Interesting theory... Probably completely wrong, but it opens
fascinating fields of speculation... Let's say young Snape and young
Andromeda had a love affair going on while still at school. She gets
pregnant, but in the meantime he gets tangled in the DE mess. Maybe
he doesn't even know she's pregnant. It was the 70s after all, that
kind of thing happened all the time. Somehow and for whatever reason,
she gets that Ted Tonks to marry her and recognize the child as his
own. So Nymphadora becomes a Tonks when she should have been a Snape
(or an Evans ?). Now the TRULY fascinating thing is this : where did
she get her special automorphic-or-whatever-it-is-called power ? Is
it a spontaneous mutation of some kind, is it completely non-genetic
or is it inherited ? And if it is inherited, who did she get it
from ? Her mother, or her father ? Could it be that Snape is a
morphicthingy too ? Is that how he can go back to the DE and to LV
without getting killed, and spy on them : because he doesn't go as
Snape but as someone else ? Incidentally, is that also why he looks
so horrible : because he wants to ? Oooh, so many exciting
possibilities... Probably completely wrong, but so exciting :-)
