Me: I have to agree with you on this. It also struck me how curious
it was that JKR brought Firenze back again just to teach a subject
that Harry and Ron, if either of them can help it, will drop quicker
than a hot potato. Therefore surely there must be something more to
this character than his new role as teacher.
As for what information he has about Harry/Voldemort whilst it may
not be a prophecy in the Trelawney sense of the word, I believe they
must know something of what her prophecy contained, even if they
read it in the heavens. PS/SS, Pg 187
(UK):
Bane - 'Remember, Firenze, we are sworn not to set oursleves against
the heavens. Have we not read what is to come in the movements of
the planets?'
While Harry presumes that the Centaurs read that Voldemort is going
to return with full power, why would Bane bring this up in reference
to rescuing Harry? Whilst we know he believes helping humans is
beneath centaurs, the fact he states the above with ref. to Harry
makes me wonder whether perhaps what they have been reading is
Harry's death/sacrifice at the hands of Voldemort. This would tie in
with what Bane is saying - we know the boy is fated to die, do not
try and meddle in the affairs of the heavens by trying to rescue him.
This is reinforced further by what Firenze's parting words to Harry
were:
'The planets have been read wrongly before now, even by centaurs. I
hope this is one of those times.'(Pg 189)
Whilst again this could be applied to the rise of Voldemort it makes
more sense if the centaurs believe that Harry will die or sacrifice
himself. Firenze either hopes he is wrong becuase if Harry dies
Voldemort will truly reign or because he seems to like the
young 'foal' and hopes he does not have to sacrifice himself.
In any case, I think Firenze will have a much greater role in the
following books.
