I'm just now reading through PoA for my second time, so I can't
comment in-depth or with much profundity right now, but I
believe that it was partially desperation. Harry not only needed
someone, but someone who knew his parents well. Harry had this
same sort of kinship toward Lupin, but Sirius was even more
important because of his role as godfather. He was clearly
someone James and Lily trusted deeply, and I think that means a
lot to Harry. Kids don't need really good reasons to believe
things, especially when they /want/ to believe it. As the books
go on, the animosity between Sirius and Snape only helps Harry
to cement his affection for Sirius.
