Gryffindor yet almost a RavenClaw? That would be Hermione. Remember
when Hermione gave every one the time/date Galleon coins at one of
their DA meetings in the latest book? She said she put a Protean charm
on them and someone commented how brainy she was, and asked why she
wasn't in Ravenclaw. Hermione said the Sorting Hat thought about
putting her in Ravenclaw.

Back on the subject of feathers. If Fawkes uses a feather every time
he sends a message to someone, then there must be tons of these
feathers laying around. True we only see two or three messages sent in
OoP, but Dumbledore must have used Fawkes for the same purpose on
other occassion that we haven't seen. He seems to do so, ask Fawkes to
be a messenger, very casually as if it's not a big deal. So Dumbledore
could have collected a dozen feather by now.

There was some speculation a while back that the Order of the Phoenix
would be a group of people who all had Fawkes feather wands. These
would be specially made for the Order to help them combat Voldemort.
Looks even more like that could be possible now that we know there are
a few feathers lying around.

More on feathers-
There has to be a limit to how many feathers this bird can give up. I
would think that just to be able to fly, it would need to retain some
of it's tail feathers, and exactly how many tail feathers would a bird
like this have?

That may not be that big a problem because Fawkes has just gone
through another lifecycle regeneration, forced by eating a Death Curse
in order to protect Dumbledore (in the MoM Atrium battle). Since he
has just regenerated, he probably has a whole new set of tail feathers.

Just a thought.
