   Linda:
     I agree. I think it is as simple as whether you know the pass 
word or not and I have another example for you. At the beginning of 
CoS, when HR get to the portrait they can't get in because they don't 
know the password. If Hermione hadn't shown up with the password, 
they would have been sleeping in the corridor. Additionally, HR 
seemed to be aware of that, which suggests your explantion is indeed 
how the system works.
