I think one of the new characters might be Susan
Bones.  In the first book, she was mentioned as one of
the students being sorted.  Even in the movie, they
took pains to mention her name in the
sorting...therefore, she must be important later in
the series.  Plus, her parents were some of the people
who were killed by Voldemort.
