Hello!!
Long time listener, first time caller...
My prediction is that the Sorting Hat is a bit like the Pensive.  The 
Sorting Hat is Dumbledore's brain/mind! However, this may or may not 
have been discussed, sorry if I've stepped on anybody's toes
