He's no longer a pet by the END of GoF, but he

Ok, now I'm confused.  How is Peter possible still a pet in GoF??  After it's in PoA that they find out that "scabbers" isn't scabbers, and he flees into the forest.  So, if that's true, how can he be back as a pet for GoF?  Please explain.  Thanks!!!
