If you think that Lupin is really James, the you'd have to concluse
that Snape saw James'name on the Map at the end of Book 3. Why
wouldn't he say something in the shack, amid his hysteria, rather
than acting and speaking to Sirius as if he thought Sirius had
betrayed James?

Merlin answered:

Because James is actually in Remus' body thanks to a switching
spell. Another clue that I forgot to mention was that Lupin burst
into the room in a flash of red sparks, the color of a true Gryffindor
(AKA heir of Godric).

Now Laura:
But we don't know exactly how the map works, and we know even less
about this "switching bodies" spell that we've invented ourselves.
And the red sparks doesn't have to have anything to do with
anything. We also have reasons to suspect that Lupin was in
Gryffindor himself. Could he not be a "true Gryffindor"? Besides,
what's to say that the REAL Lupin isn't the Heir of Gryffindor?
Sure, James and/or Harry could be the "true" heir of Gryffindor, but
so could Ron, Hagrid, Dumbledore, or Moaning Myrtle for all we know.
On the topic of the Heir of Gryffindor: I think it's a great theory
and there's a lot of evidence to support it, but I'm not sure if I'd
totally like it. It seems too...contrived, you know? Though I
suppose I could deal with it if it came along with Heirs of Ravenclaw
and Hufflepuff.
