This post made me remember a line from an 'Anne' book (by LM 
Montgomery) where Gilbert doesn't have a gift for Anne on their 
anniversary, and so, because her present to him is a knife, she 
makes him 'buy it from her for a penny, lest it cut their love' 
[paraphrase].
