I woke up with a start this morning, as this idea popped into my head.
Now that everyone knows about the Dark Mark being used as a magical tattoo on
the Death Eaters, (after GoF) why can't the Ministry of Magic check Sirius Black
for the tattoo and clear him?
My understanding is that Fudge doesn't believe, or doesn't want to believe, anything Dumbledore & co. are telling him about Voldemort or the Death Eaters, even regarding the Dark Mark. In fact, when Snape shows Fudge the Dark Mark (GoF, chapter 36), Fudge shakes his head and says, "I don't know what you and your staff are playing at, Dumbledore, but I have had enough..." Not exactly a vote of confidence.
