I brought this up in the distant past, and someone was kind enough to
point out that there are pre-Christian holidays or celebrations that
fall at roughly the same times of year. 

Christmas as we know it is actually a combination of several Christian
and pre-Christian events.

Don't remember all the details, sorry.
