Could it belong to Sirius? That would explain why it appears to 
be abandoned. And the snake handle would give credence to the 
Sirius must've been a Slytherin theory.

I really think it more likely all the Marauders were Gryffindors, but 
it intrigues me anyway.  As to how much of Hogwarts Castle the 
Marauders had access to, don't forget that Peter could turn 
himself into a rat at any time, not just at the full moon. Barring 
encounters with Mrs. Norris, or teachers skilled enough to 
recognize an animagus, Rat!Peter would have had the run of the 
place, common rooms, faculty offices and all.
