Another suggestion-
It seems as if the map has 'dead' spots on it. Harry didn't see
himself until he exited the classroom where F&G gave him the map.
H/R/H/W weren't seen until they exited Hagrid's hut.
So possibly, in order to keep the map from being too cluttered, only
areas of significants are show. Since the map is for 'mischief
making', there would be no need to know who was in the Great Hall or
the common rooms. It might be nice to know Snape was in the Great
Hall, but unless you are making michief in the vicinity, it serves no
purpose. Plus the Great Hall and the Common Rooms are very crowded, so
the map would show one big jumble of overlaping names.
In this vane, I speculate that the map has many dead spots because
those spots aren't relevant or useful to sneeking around the castle.
Again, consider that size of the castle relative to how small the map
is, and it makes sense that the more you could do to unclutter it, the
more effective the map would be.
Just a thought.
