Amazing.  :)  I wondered if it might be a myth, but it's great to have that question finally answered for me. Thanks for sharing the information!

I agree with your suggestion that Voldemort is trying to put space between himself and the Tom Riddle indentity. Dumbledore refers to him as Lord Voldemort, rather than Riddle, as if that is his true name. This, the way I see it, is Dumbledore's acceptance that Tom Riddle has been "dead" to the world ever since Voldemort was "born." 

If Hitler tried to keep his background hazy because of weaknesses like insanity, etc., in his family tree, then Voldemort is likely doing a similar thing. Tom Riddle is a Muggle name, a non-magical name, a weak name. Now he's no longer Muggle-born Tom Riddle at all. Now he's "Lord" over all magical people.
