I've also been giving this some thought. Is it possible that JKR is
using the similarities between Harry and Riddle purely to prove her
point that it is our choices that show who we truly are? We have two
boys, both orphaned, neither pureblood, both powerful wizards for
their age, etc. So much in common and yet going in such different
directions from the same kind of starting point. The jury is still
out on whether Harry is related to Voldemort (maybe OOP will answer
that one), but it may just be they started out with the same
problems, but chose very different ways to deal with them. Some may
say that, well, Harry had Dumbledore to guide him. But we learn from
COS that Tom had Dumbledore as well, but saw him as an obstacle
rather than an ally.
With regard to family, I've just had another thought. We don't know
anything about James' family. What if they were very much like the
Dursleys, only from the wizard perspective. Could They have cut off
James for marrying a "mudblood?" Perhaps this is why we don't see
them, and why Dumbledore wouldn't have wanted them to raise Harry,
passing their dark beliefs on to him.
Food for thought?
