In fact combining being an animagus with the use of the time-turner, 
Crookshanks could be Hermione. She'd be an older version keeping an 
eye out for the younger version. I don't know how she'd have entered 
the pet shop, but once there she'd have worked to ensure that no-one 
else bought her, which shouldn't have been too difficult.

Having suggested that, I do hope that the time-turner does not turn 
up in OoP or beyond. Time travel often seems a dubious plot devise 
(though dealt with really well in PoA, my favourite of the books so 
far), and is really difficult to reason about for us cannon fodder.
