Or, the map IS cluttered up. Regardless of the number of students there
really are at Hogwarts, there must be at least 35-40 per class, plus
teachers and other staff, there would be at least 300 people on the grounds
at all times. If you are trying to sneak around, you won't read all the
names of students in the dormitory or common rooms or classrooms, unless
you're going to sneak through that area. If it's 2 a.m., you look to see if
anyone's in the Gryffindor common room or the corridors outside, leading to
where you want to go. You don't necessarily read each name of all of the
students sleeping in their beds. So Fred and George, and even Harry, don't
see Pettigrew, because they don't look. Remember, you have to activate the
map and wipe it later, you wouldn't have it out on your desk all the time,
so maybe Harry never looked at the map when Pettigrew was somewhere that
Harry would look at and immediately realize the name was out of place. Same
for Fred and George, they'd have even less reason to check something like
that, being so focused on mischief and not on the battle with Voldemort.

Snape DID see Pettigrew on the map, didn't he? I'm vague on who did, but
someone did see him, when the group was on their way toward the Whomping
Willow. So people do show up on the map, even in their animal state.

Speaking of the Marauder's Map, here's something I REALLY want to know: I'm
not positive, but I'm pretty sure the last mention of the Map in GoF, it was
in the possession of Moody/Crouch Jr. What happened to it after that? Does
Harry get it back? Any ideas?
