I always thought Kakaroff pampered Krum because he's a famous
quidditch player. IMO, Kakaroff is the type that loves to bask in
the glory of others. I see him as a self centered and posturing
scene-stealer who is of a kind with Lockhart. He just isn't as
proactive as Gilderoy in the way he seeks out attention. Instead of
steling others achievements, he latches on to another wizard/witch
of high standing and rides on his/her coat tails. IMHO, it must have
been the thrill of his life when one of HIS students became known as
the premiere seeker on the international quidditch scene. He thinks
he needs to pamper Krum in order to insure his ticket to ride. The
ironic thing is, it seems to make Krum uncomfortable. Instead of
getting him in Krum's good graces, it is turning Krum off. That need
to live off the glory of others is probably part of the reason
Kakaroff becasme a death eater in the first place. I wonder when he
joined up. I'm thinking it probably wasn't until LV was firmly in
power and he believed he was definitely picking the winning side.

Personally, I think Krum will end up being one of the good
guys. The only canon I have to base this on is Krum's obvious
disdain for Karkaroff in the scene when Krum comes to say good bye
to Hermione at the end of GOF. Flimsy, I know, but there you are.
