I definately agree with you and have thought the same thing as well.
For instance (and based entirely on cannon), in GoF (p.651 AM PB)
Voldemort says "And here we have six missing Death Eaters...One, too
cowardly to return (Karkaroff)...he will pay. One, who I believe has
left me forever...he will be killed, of course..." Who else could he
have been talking about than Snape?
Since Snape had turned spy and Dumbledore has most likely asked him
to take up that job again, he is definatley putting himself at great
risk - especially if/since Voldemort knows he has "left me forever",
he is not going to believe his return. Of course Snape could act
like he is Voldemort's spy, telling him he can keep tabs on
Hogwarts/Dumbledore's/Harry's going ons, but even if
Voldemort "bought" that, I think he would still know and just be
bidding his time for Snape would obviously be useful.
Also (and forgive me if I'm wrong - I lent my SS to a friend),
didn't Snape run into Quirrell and say something like "when you've
had time to figure out where your loyalties lie". Voldemort, beneath
the turban, had to have heard that entire conversation. He would
also know that Snape was muttering a counter curse to save Harry
(during first Quidditch match), etc. I find it very hard to believe
that anything could persuade Voldemort that Snape was truly on his
side.
So yes, I agree that Snape will at least be at great risk of being
killed. Maybe JKR will have Harry save his life. Wonder if that
would make Snape like Harry or just hate him more? Also, did you or
anyone else think about who would be a potions teacher if he was
killed? And also, just MHO, I have a great deal of respect for
Snape - 1) on his own turning from badguy into goodguy and 2)being
loyal enough to Dumbledore to return to that "spy" (if that is
infact what Dumbledore has asked him). Does anyone think Harry has
or will have that respect for him? (Though probably not based on
Snape's knowledge that James or Rumus wasn't part of Black's
childhood joke yet still "hates" Harry and because of him Harry has
to live with Dursleys and Black is fugitive - well, then, I guess I
answered that last question myself, lol).
By the way, my name is Deaviamara (pronounced de ahvia maura). This
is my first post. I live in the Philadelphia area. Even though I
have only discovered Harry Potter since January '03, I have read the
books 4 times; have read most of the Lexicon (just dicovered that
earlier this week); am 5 chapters short of finishing The Unofficial
Guide to the Mysteries of Harry Potter (which I will finish before
midnight 6/21); have seen both movies about 90 times each if not
more; and collect the trading cards - currently have all 4 of the
original sets minus (temporarily) about 41 cards.
