Referring to my post of a few minutes ago, where I was talking to Linda
about the "yeah, this is supposed to show how stupid prejudice is, but it
might be nice if we understood the rules" - I think the point is that, in
the eyes of the Malfoys who are "purebloods" and care about such things,
their family has been wizards born of wizards, and married only wizards born
of wizards, back as far as records are kept. Anyone who's born of muggles,
whether both their parents were Muggles and their child was a spontaneous
genetic mutation (because I really don't believe that hidden squib ancestry
explains it at all - I don't think JKR writes that way, otherwise I think
she's slip in there through dialogue somehow that anyone who shows wizarding
talents *must* have a wizard or witch back in the family tree somehow) or
they are the result of a witch marrying a Muggle (*gasp!*), is 'tainted' -
through no fault of their own, especially the kids like Hermione whose
parents weren't trying to produce a witch child and get a foothold in the
WW, or whatever garbage someone like the Malfoys might think up to say.
