Star Opal, with a bunch of Dumbledore could but doesn't use Dark Magic quotes concludes:

"Does this mean something? Could, in the future, someone end up dying because
DD *wouldn't* use Dark Magic? Or perhaps in the past?

Would in such a case Harry doubt his mentor? Start thinking maybe its okay
to use dark magic - if its for a good cause. Until, of course, he has to
make a similar decision... Harry's Sacrifice (tm)? Maybe DD will be the
Sacrifice.

Comments? Any other ideas?"

I think this qualifies as an "other idea." I've mentioned it before and to be honest I'm not sure I entirely believe it myself, but sometimes I can't escape the feeling that Dumbledore is Voldemort. Basically the idea is that Voldemort had some kind of Saul-on-the-road-to-Damascus type epiphany, realizes that he's been a horrible evil git his whole life, and goes back in time to try to undo the evil he has done. He's already done the disappear and come back with a new name trick when he went from Riddle to Voldemort. He seems to know an awful lot about Voldemort. Then there's that line in the pensieve where he says that Snape is no more a Death Eater than he is, while knowing that Snape WAS a Death Eater. Being a former Death Eater is being more of a Death Eater than never having been one isn't it? I know there are some superficial differences, hair color for instance, but if muggles can change those things, wizards certainly can.

Mind you, I don't particularly like the idea. I think it'd be a pretty cheesy cop out kind of way to end things but as Arthur Weasley says, "There you are."
