Sorry, not familiar enough with TBAY to write this theory in that vein, so
it's just plain!
I think the "ancient magic" that Dumbledore invoked to protect Harry while
he is in the care of his relations (referenced at the end of GoF) has
something to do with Harry's birthday.
Think about it--every book describes his birthday very carefully, drawing a
lot of attention to it. And it's always at the Dursleys'. But then Harry
leaves, and it's no big deal.
In the first book, Hagrid shows up to collect him immediately after his
birthday.
In the second book, Ron and the Flying Weasleys (good band name?) turn up
shortly after his birthday, and he spends the remaining vacation time at the
Burrow.
In the third book, he runs away from Privet Drive, the Knight bus picks him
up, and he spends the remaining time in Diagon Alley. But he has his
birthday first.
In the fourth book, he goes to the Quidditch match with the Weasleys, but he
has his birthday on Privet Drive first.
And at the end of the fourth book, Ron tells Harry that Molly has asked
Dumbledore if Harry can come to stay with them for the whole summer.
Dumbledore says no, not the whole summer, but maybe later on. I'll
guarantee you that if he makes it, it will be after his birthday.
Is Harry specifically vulnerable on his birthday? And if so, why?
Terry LJ (feverishly counting down hours, now!)
