Well, I don't know about Lupin as James, but I remember hearing 
something from JKR about Lupin that he (paraphrased) has a dark 
side, or something.  That he's not the nice, harmless gentleman he's 
made out to be.  I've also heard (don't know if it's directly from 
JKR or a mangling of some interview with her) that Harry will never 
see a live Lily or James.

It makes me wonder about a line from when I re-read PoA, when Lupin 
called Voldemort Lord Voldemort in front of Harry, and Harry thought 
it was odd, because only Dumbledore had ever called him that.
