Well, if it was an editing mistake, I wouldn't expect it to be a case 
of the American editors being "bettter" than the British ones.  After 
all, not only is OOP is an awfully big book, but you'd have to been 
able to make the connection to the other books.  I can very easily 
see one editor's eyes sliding right over the name, while another 
thinks, "Hey, this isn't right.  *scribbles note on margin to ask JKR 
if Rookwood's first name is Algernon or not*"  Dollars to donughts 
there's at least one editorial oversite buried somewhere in the 
American version too.  :)
