Looks very much like an inconsistency (for now) whilst reading OoP I 
thought that seeing death meant that Lily was not dead and Cedric 
triggered Harry's ability to see the Thestrals !

But we know Neville, and Luna can see them - Law of averages due to 
the number of students means some of them would have seen death and 
Thestrals would be 'common' knowledge or a least be noted 
in 'Hogwarts a History' - I don't think Hermione would have kept 
quiet about them.

My view is the method of propulsion for 'horseless' carriages was 
different before and this is the first year of Thestral power - 
comments anyone.  

Also Thestrals are 'rare' according to 'Fantastic Beasts' so where do 
you get a herd of them for the carriages ?  Have they been mentioned 
in canon before OoP ?  I remember them from someware else but fanfic 
and books 1-4(-5) are getting very blurred in my mind.  Need a 
pensieve to sort out my jumbled thoughts <vbg>
