If house elves only come out the way their owners want, then what about
Dobby? I'm assuming his family served the Malfoys for generations, yet Dobby
broke away to warn Harry and was very, very happy to have been freed. If
Dobby had been so brainwashed, he would have been horrified to have been
freed, like Winky. But he gave ol' Lucius an ass-kicking as soon as he
could.

On the other hand, the Hogwarts house elves flatly refused to be freed by
Hermione (why didn't she go back to the kitchens to see if she was
successful?). I wish a few of them of them had chosen to take the hats and
socks, so we could see more of the house elf debate. Right now, I think it's
a mixture of nature vs. nurture.
