Well... as a Snapefan, I must say I'm really, really angry with
James. He and Sirius did come off like a couple of bullies in that
scene. Snape fought back as best he could, and I was proud of him
that he didn't break -- at least in the part of the memory we saw.
He's not a person to turn the other cheek, so I can see him plotting
and carrying out terrible revenges... which lead to more bullying...
and yes, eventually to The Prank.
The righteous anger Snape always expresses about that event makes me
believe that it was very much out of proportion to the level of
warfare between him and James/Sirius that preceded it. For some
reason Sirius raised the stakes to life and death. And after what I
saw in the Pensieve, I have to wonder if maybe Snape was right about
James being in on it, and only getting cold feet at the last minute.
One thing is for sure, James has to change a lot between the time of
that memory and the beginning of his seventh year. There's no way an
arrogant bully would have been selected as Head Boy.
