>[SPOILER]

So this is it ground zero...

I bought the book and read it completly in something like less than
a day.
The plot wasn't too amazing about the dream which-appears-to-be-a-
manipulation. But the pure load of new information just kills me !

First of all I'm so glad James isn't a saint. I was litterally
gaping like a fish when I read Snape's pensieve scene (chapter 28)
and my brain was screaming "I knew it, I knew it, those bastards
hurted him"

The only problem is that Snape is a grow up adult, who had to dealt
his teenager's fear and deception with dead people. He will never
make peace with them and move further in life. Both of them died as
heros, and therefore are going to be worshipped forever. The guys
who bullied him are going to have a place in history books, not him.
And don't talk me about selfdefence toward the bad slytherin. Sirius
and Remus both agreed that Snape made they're life hell too. That
sounds pretty lame to me, like when Malfoy said that the hippogriff
attacked him....

He's fighting Voldermort, he faced a werewolf, but his worst memory
(and that's neither his nor Harry's commentary, that's the chapter
28's title) is james taking off his pants (oh! said the little
slasher inside me). You had to ask yourself, why Snape isn't more
unbalanced...
How are these fact are going to be integrate in existing theories ?

So now we know that :

** "I don't need help from filthy little Mudbloods like her" (p571
hardcover, Bloomsbury) He couldn't even bear to be help by Lily. It
could be male proudness, in that particular scene.
But later Lilly Shouts "You're as bad as he is" and James
answers "I'd NEVER call you a you-know-what!". So they both implied
that young Snape's attitude toward muggle born described him. When
she says "bad" about Snape, James immediatly links it with racism.

So Snape was racist. now, we have a obvious reason about why Snape
joined Voldermort.

** "- Now... how long have you been teaching at hogwarts?
 - Fourteen years" Snape replied
[...]
"- You applied first for the Defence Against the Dark Arts post[...]
And you have applied regularly for the Defence Against the Dark Arts
post since you first joined the school, I believe" (Umbridge, p323,
hard cover, Bloomsbury)

Snape teaches potion since he's 21-22. Just after Voldermort's
death, just after. He joined Dumbledore's team after the war. What
was his job during Voldermort's trouble time ? He could be
interesting to know his other ambitions.

And he asked officially the DADA post !! that wasn't a rumor. I'm
still convinced that's a cover to prove he disagree with Dumbledore,
but that's a poor cover... Plus he seems not as efficient as James
or Sirius (or Remus) with wand waving.

** "I know you don't like Snape but he is a superb Occlumens"
(Remus, p465 hardcover bloomsbury)

he's a Occlumens and can practice Legilimency(that's not mind
reading *grins*)... and never tried on Harry before...

there's certainly an ethic question about that power. Because even
if that power looks like cool, it seems to me to be a violation of
your mind.

Voldermort who is a powerful legilimens certainly never bothered
himself with veritaserum. but IMHO, he's really stupid to think he's
the only one to have that power.

** "suddenly Harry's mind was teeming with memories that were not
his : a hook-nosed man was shouting at a cowering woman, while a
small dark-haired boy cried in the corner... a greasy-haired
teenager sat alone in a dark bedroom, pointing his wand at the
ceiling, shooting down flies... a girl was laughing as a scrawny boy
tried to mount a bucking broomstick - " (p521 - 522, harcover,
Bloomsbury)

that memory recks lonelyness and other usual teenager's problems.
Snape's father didn't look really nice, poor thing.
he used to do magic during holidays (like lily with teacup into
frog).
The last on the girl is more difficult to explain. the girl was
laughing _as_ but not necersly _at_.
Rowling is such a teaser. I hope she will explain those random
scenes latter. there's no doubt he's one of the most developped
teatcher and that she wants us to wonder about his past.

Did you see that after Harrry's first legilimency on him, he was
angry but manage to continue the lesson.

** he isn't working as an active deatheater (wasn't on the raid at
the MoM)
but Lucius keeps acting friendly with him (" I expected better,
Lucius malfoy always speaks most highly of you!"Umbridge, p657).
He's afraid to call Voldermort by his name, but he doesn't say you
know who either. He use Dark Lord.
>
> 7. Are we supposed to dislike James Potter now?

No I don't think so... we suppose to feel more sympathie toward
Snape. Afterall, James was just a kid at that time. He did
courageous acts after, and died to protect his family.
IMHO, the main idea is that harry had to stop seeing Snape as a liar
and an ennemy (which apparently is something that won't come 'til
the last book)

Annechan

PS : I would also add as an afterthough that I loved Phineas' line
(former headmaster, and grand grand grand father of Sirius) .
Phineas who looks like a non angry snaep to me.
