Although I agree with you about this (it drives me crazy when Harry is
stupid about stuff like this), I think in this book JKR did a good job of
giving a believeable reason why Harry would be reluctant about going to
Dumbledore. Really, Albus is very cold to him throughout most of the book,
and I can sympathise with Harry not feeling comfortable approaching him
under the circumstances. Was it a mistake? Yes. But, I think, an
understandable one.
