I thought Snape's reaction to Lily's offer of help was perfectly 
understandable.  I mean, would any teenage boy (or for that matter, 
adults) want to be rescued by :gasp: a girl?  I don't think it 
mattered much whether she is muggle-born or not.  It would have been 
better if Lily just pulled out her wand and hex James but she 
pleaded (kind of) to James.  No teenage boy wants a girl to plea for 
him, no matter how hideous the situation they are facing.  Adding to 
James's comment "I will let him down if you go out with me."?  I 
think Snape would rather die than let that happen.
