But at the same time, there's also a kind of... serenity... in knowing
what your part is; what task it is for you to carry out.
Angst is usually more "what is my place in the world?" "what is my
life all about?". It's the uncertainty that's the killer.
That's why you never let soldiers have any free time in the field.
Boredom, idleness, and uncertainty kill. Activity and a sense of
mission keeps the mind on the task at hand.
Harry rages about wanting to be left alone; he wants out. He's tired
of the game and doesn't want to play any more. But the prophesy - and
Dumbledore - make it clear to him that he doesn't have much choice in
the matter. Voldemort is NOT going away, he's NOT going to let Harry
life an undisturbed life, and one way or another, Harry is going to
have to see this through to the end.
That kind of realization has a way of focussing one's priorities.
I loved the DA scenes. You see... I went to military college. Think
"Hogwarts with guns". (And we had 7 "Griffendors") The parallels with
Hogwarts (and by association, the British private school system) are
really, really striking sometimes.
And sometimes, we had tasks, competitions, whatever that didn't get
enough class time, and required practice out of class. That meant
somebody had to take the lead, and organize practices, or additional
group study, or whatever. In a school full of leaders... it's the
exceptional ones who can pull together a group and get them working
together. I daresay ol' Harry made me proud.
The remarks about "Ender's Game" lately I find particularly inciteful.
Hogwarts is transforming from a "school", into an "academy". Future
Aurors and members of the Order are being trained - indeed, a portion
of their "unit" has already seen combat (and been blooded in the
process) Half of DA are now "vets". They're going to be fearsome once
they graduate.
I LOVE the idea of Harry as the next DADA teacher. He's proven himself
worthy of the job, and he's been up against Voldy 4 times now - who
better?
But more to the point, it would allow Harry to forge the kinds of
relationships amongst his fellow students that he's going to need in
the coming fight. They need to be able to trust him, and he needs to
trust them too. What better way to forge these links than to get them
training together?
Unfortunately, this doesn't bode well for the HPfG Navy. Command
doesn't lead itself particularly well to romantic relationships. And
even if Harry doesn't wind up in a leadership/command position
(although it sure seems to me that he's headed that way) knowing that
he's going to eventually have a Final Showdown with Voldy is sure to
put a damper on any sort of romantic commitment.Hard to think about
dating when you've got this big battle in your future....
