Being a newbie, I can't speak for the MD vets, but I know I'm not 
quite willing to give up.  I suspect the MD party line will be that 
Dumbledore assigned Snape to "teach" Harry Occlumency will full 
understanding of what the result would be.  That is, he wanted to 
increase Harry's connection with V. (Which would give us another nice 
ironic Ron-Seerism.  Remember when he exclaimed that maybe Snape was 
trying to increase Harry's connection with V.  Sure, his 
interpretation of the fact would be totally wrong, but...) Oh, I 
fully imagine in light of his talk with Harry at the end that things 
didn't go as he'd planned and that he genuinely feels horrible that 
he's left Harry orphaned again.  I just can't rid myself of that 
sniggling suspicion that there's considerably more going underneath 
everthing else and that Dumbledore has been and still is playing a 
very, very dangerous game.
