You're right; I've always liked Neville myself--there's no real 
evidence that he was the weak, spineless member of the Gryffs, and 
I've always seethed (on N's behalf) whenever comparisons between him 
and Wormtail were made.  I mean, timidity and nervousness and 
forgetfulness aren't even half as bad as cowardiance and outright 
malice.  Plus, I think it's a little too pat that he'd be a traitor 
at all.
