First off, we don't actually know the color of the light that hit him,
as the red light was the one before the one that hit him:

'Harry saw Sirius duck Bellatrix's jet of red light: He was laughing
at her. "Come on, you can do better then that!" he yelled, his voice
echoing around the cav ernous room.
The second jet of light hit him squarely in the chest.'

However, there is a good chance it was another jet of red light, which
was shown to indicate a stunning spell earlier:
'He saw a flash of red light and knew that she had attempted to
Stun one of them - then she screamed very loudly.'

OTOH, there was a reference to his wasted face when he fell...

As far as the veil goes, I strongly suspect it is the veil between the
living world and the dead. There seems to be a lot of foreshadowing
when they originally encountered it, too.

'Still the veil swayed gently, as though somebody had just passed
through it.
"Sirius?" Harry spoke again, but much more quietly now that he was
nearer.
He had the strangest feeling that there was someone standing right
behind the veil on the other side of the archway.'

'The gently rippling veil intrigued him; he felt a very strong
inclination to climb up on the dias and walk through it.'

I strongly suspect Harry'll go through it at some point in the future.
