One of the main themes of the book was Harry growing up and having to
take responsibility for things himself. He failed to do this -
particularly when he fails to learn Occulmancy (not sure about the
spelling there). Snape tells him he must learn to control his
emotions and he doesn't manage to do this. Sirius had become a father
figure for Harry, and he often turned to him when he couldn't talk to
anyone else. He could have used the mirror but he didn't, he forgot.
Harry still has to come to terms with his limitations and weaknesses
before he can become an adult. But one of the great things about this
mirror was the scene at the end when he tries to find Sirius to talk
to, and who does he see staring back at him - himself. Harry has to
start taking responsibility for himself now.
