I don't know if I'm answering a rhetorical question, but I read a 
lot of fanfiction, and I wasn't the least bit sorry SB got it.  I 
never liked him, and I always suspected that he was a lot more 
unpredictable and ambiguous than he was portrayed in PoA and GoF.  
In fact, the change in his personality was so drastic between books 
4 and 5 (one of my many complaints about the book) that it made me 
suspect that JKR herself has been reading too much fanfic, lol.
