OoTP (spoilers) Speaking about concern for children (and some adults)

Well, adults often do get away with abuse of children, and some 
children get away with abuse of other children. No point in glossing 
that over.

That aside, I personally respected Harry's stoicism. I didn't see it 
at all as caving in to the abuse. He knew he could go to McGonagall, 
and he made a considered decision not to. Even though he could 
easily have spent his time wallowing in self-pity, wondering why he 
has to be such a victim, he is *not* a victim. He wasn't afraid of 
Umbridge and he showed it by standing up to her and robbing her of 
any satisfaction she might have felt. 

Likewise Harry's potentially suicidal thoughts: although he sinks 
into despair, he manages to drag himself out without harming 
himself, by taking refuge in his friendships. And when it comes down 
to it, Harry's actual actions are more powerful than his possible 
actions.
